Justin and Dana -- white, young, and naive -- move to Brooklyn to make a documentary about inner-city life. Dana follows Thomas, a black teenager poised to rise above the pitfalls of ghetto life. Justin documents the lives of two NYPD officers, Dan Masterson and Alex Mora. Masterson is a decorated cop with a jaded view of inner-city culture. Mora is an idealistic, Latin-American rookie trying to change the world. As the filming progresses, emotions and violence get in the way of the filmmakers' objectivity, until they become active participants in the lives of those whom they were observing through the lens.
Exploring the pitfalls that can befall documentarians when they get ‘too close’ to their subjects, The Project is a reminder that the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.
