SUMMARY:Pontypool
DESCRIPTION: EXCLUSIVE WESTERN CANADA PREMIERE SCREENING Shock jock Gran
 t Mazzy has\, once again\, been kicked-off the Big City airwaves\, and n
ow the only job he can get is the early morning show at CLSY Radio in
Pontypool\, Ontario\, broadcasting from the basement of the small town’
s only church. What begins as another boring day of school bus cancellat
ions - due to yet another massive snowstorm - quickly turns deadly when
reports start piling in of people developing strange speech patterns and
evoking horrendous acts of violence. But... there’s nothing coming in o
n the news wires. Is this really happening? Before long\, Grant and the
small staff at CLSY find themselves trapped in the radio station as th
ey discover that the source of this insane behaviour is beyond anything
they could ever imagine. One of Canada's most respected filmmakers (and
EIFF favorite)\, Bruce McDonald\, takes a detour off of Highway 61 and
into the macabre\, with this stunningly well-acted and provocative thri
ller. It’s unlike anything he's done before\, and seriously unlike any o
ther thriller we've seen in years. EIFF is thrilled to present this excl
usive Western Canada premiere screening\, with director Bruce McDonald
in attendance to answer all of your questions (and trust us - you WILL
want to talk about this one afterwards!). In attendance: Director Bruce
McDonald and STAR Stephen McHattie\, with a special post-screening Q&A
hosted by Todd Babiak. This EXCLUSIVE Western Canada Premiere is made
possible with the generous support of Super Channel and Maple Picture
s ! Pontypool is in competition for the Citytv Canadian Feature Award
\, chosen by YOU – the audience. Vote online until noon on Saturday\,
 October 4th at www.citytv.com.

SUMMARY:REPO! The Genetic Opera
DESCRIPTION: EXCLUSIVE WESTERN CANADA PREMIERE SCREENING An epidemic of
organ failures devastates the planet. Panic erupts\, and scientists feve
rishly make plans for a massive organ harvest. Out of the tragedy\, Gene
 Co\, a multi-billion dollar biotech company\, emerges. GeneCo provides o
rgan transplantation for a profit. In addition to financing options\, Ge
neCo reserves the right to implement default remedies\, including…reposs
ession. For those who can't keep up with their organ payments\, collecti
on is the responsibility of "organ repo men"\, skilled assassins contrac
ted by GeneCo\, ordered to recover GeneCo's property...by any means nece
ssary. With an eclectic cast that includes veteran character actors Paul
Sorvino and Bill Moseley\, Buffy icon Anthony Head\, and tabloid magnet
Paris Hilton\, it’s readily apparent that this is not just another nigh
t at the movies. And just for fun: supporting work from musicians as dis
parate as Joan Jett\, Sarah Brightman\, and Skinny Puppy mastermind Nive
k Ogre. Expanding upon his 2006 short film of the same name\, director D
arren Lynn Bousman has created a visionary horror/musical that hits the
big screen accompanied by the deafening buzz of the lucky few to have al
ready seen it. It received a rapturous response at this year’s FantAsia
Film Festival Montreal \, and now EIFF is ecstatic to present this EXCL
USIVE Western Canada Premiere screening\, courtesy of our friends at Ma
ple Pictures . This will be your ONLY chance to see this visual feast on
the big screen here in E-Town… don’t say we didn’t warn you! This film
is a regular admission screening. Tickets are $12 at the Empire City Ce
ntre 9 box office and available 30-minutes prior to the film screening.

SUMMARY:Bonjour!!! Je m'appelle Maxime Renard
DESCRIPTION:In the background\, the reality television of today… In the
 foreground\, our hero - the viewer\, Maxime Renard… In the rhythm of a f
unny and caustic fable\, we follow the trajectory of a man torn between
the reality of his life and the ever-elusive dream of one day being on t
elevision. In order to shoot the video gag that will make him king of th
e small screen (think ‘France’s Funniest and Most Incredibly Dangerous H
ome Videos’)\, he puts in danger his marriage\, his work\, his friends a
nd so much more... Anyone hooked on the inescapable 21st Century scourge
that is ‘reality television’ will be able to relate to this funny and b
ittersweet cautionary tale\, one told with an unmistakably idiosyncratic

SUMMARY:Big Story In A Small City
DESCRIPTION:Comedy\, satire\, tragedy – it’s all here\, in a story based
on the incredible true events that changed two families forever. It all
begins in the city of Yerevan\, Armenia. Grigor Janoyan\, a professor o
f agriculture at the University of Yerevan\, dies from a freak accident.
In accordance with Armenian tradition\, the relatives bring the decease
d into their home for the "viewing" for friends and family before the bu
rial. The family\, consumed with grief\, fails to realize that the body
on the dining room table is NOT Grigor! And as luck would have it\, Grig
or’s doppelganger is none other than Ruben Pashayan - head of Armenia’s
organized crime families. \nWonderfully quirky (in the very best sense o
f the word)\, Big Story in a Small City is the type of entertainment s
adly missing from today’s multiplexes\, and EIFF is thrilled to share th
is film with festival audiences hungry for something a little different.

SUMMARY:The Project
DESCRIPTION:Justin and Dana -- white\, young\, and naive -- move to Brook
lyn to make a documentary about inner-city life. Dana follows Thomas\, a
black teenager poised to rise above the pitfalls of ghetto life. Justin
documents the lives of two NYPD officers\, Dan Masterson and Alex Mora.
Masterson is a decorated cop with a jaded view of inner-city culture. M
ora is an idealistic\, Latin-American rookie trying to change the world.
As the filming progresses\, emotions and violence get in the way of the
filmmakers' objectivity\, until they become active participants in the
lives of those whom they were observing through the lens. Exploring the
pitfalls that can befall documentarians when they get ‘too close’ to the
ir subjects\, The Project is a reminder that the road to Hell is paved
  with good intentions. CANADIAN Premiere!

SUMMARY:The Great Match
DESCRIPTION: The Great Match tells the adventurous story of three soccer
fans – none of whom have ever met – but who nevertheless have two thing
s in common: firstly\, they live in all the farthest-flung corners of th
e planet and\, secondly\, they are all three determined to watch the TV
broadcast of the 2002 World Cup final between Germany and Brazil. The p
rotagonists in this ‘global’ comedy are a family of Mongolian nomads\, a
camel caravan of Tuareg in the Sahara\, and a group of Indios in the Am
azon. They all live 300 miles away from the next town – and the next te
levision – making their task a particularly daunting one. Nevertheless\
, these inventive people possess the resourcefulness and the willpower t
o achieve their goal. In a world where access to information is seeming
ly simple and immediate\, what happens in the most isolated places on e
arth? Intriguing stuff – and hilarious!

SUMMARY:The Cake Eaters
DESCRIPTION: The Cake Eaters is a quirky\, ensemble drama that explores
the lives of two interconnected families coming to terms with love in th
e face of loss. Living in rural America\, The Kimbrough family is a norm
ally odd bunch\; Easy\, the patriarch\, is grieving over the recent loss
of his wife\, Ceci\; Beagle\, his youngest son\, works in the local hig
h school cafeteria by day but has a burning passion inside that manifest
s itself through painting street signs\; and the eldest son\, Guy\, has
been busy pursuing his rock star dream in the big city- until the day he
learns of his mother's passing\, and that he's missed the funeral. Upon
Guy's return home\, relationships between the characters begin to unrav
el\; Beagle's pent up emotions connect with Georgia Kaminski\, a termina
lly ill teenage girl wanting to experience love before it's too late\; a
nd Guy discovers that his high school sweetheart has moved on and starte
d a family of her own. \nThis is a remarkably assured directorial debut
for actress Mary Stuart Masterson – she renders this tale with the sure
hand of an old pro – and Kristen Stewart\, the actress who is about to b
e vaulted into superstardom when the Twilight franchise hits theatres
this fall\, delivers a performance which completely validates her reputa
tion as one of today’s finest young actors. It’s all guided by a wonderf
ul\, career-reviving performance by veteran character actor Bruce Dern.

SUMMARY:Roman de Gare
DESCRIPTION:In the opening moments of legendary French filmmaker Claude L
elouch’s tricky new thriller\, Roman de Gare \, we meet writer Judith R
alitzer. She is being interrogated by police\, who are questioning her a
bout her missing ghost-writer (not to mention her possible connection to
a serial killer known only as “The Magician”). Meanwhile\, radio report
 s announce the Magician’s escape from a high-security prison\; a hairdre
sser is abandoned by her boyfriend at a roadside gas station\; and a mis
sing school-teacher leaves his wife and children. Ah… but what is real…a
nd what is fiction? Confused? Well this is just the starting point for 1
00 minutes of twists and turns\, zigs and zags\, red herrings and crosse
d tracks (the film’s English title). If you fancy yourself a fan of twis

SUMMARY:Heavy Load
DESCRIPTION:HEAVY LOAD are Lewes’ answer to the Ramones\, a punk outfit s
ubject to the combustible flux of ego\, ambition\, fantasy\, expectation
and desire that fuels any emerging band. But they’re also\, uniquely\,
made up of musicians with and without learning disabilities\, which make

SUMMARY:The Forgotten Woman
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the 2006 Academy Award® nominee for Best Foreign
Language film (and EIFF 2005 Opening Night Film)\, Water \, this docume
ntary tells the story of the 20 million Indian widows who are abandoned
by their families and literally turned out into the streets when their h
usbands die. Following the international success of Deepa Mehta’s Osca
r-nominated film Water\, Ms. Mehta received thousands of letters from vi
ewers who wanted to know more about the state of widows in India today.
The Forgotten Woman is a direct response to this interest and aims to
bring about an understanding of the destitution and marginalization of m
any of the millions of widows in India today\, who are forced by age-old
traditions to live out their remaining years isolated from\, and shunne
d by\, society at large. Water was a fictional recounting of this terr

SUMMARY:War Eagle\, Arkansas
DESCRIPTION:Based on a true story\, War Eagle\, Arkansas is a character
-driven drama about a young man's choice of whether to leave his family
and friends for a career in basebell\, or stay and redeem his struggling
community. Enoch Cass has two gifts -- the first is baseball and the se
cond is the innate goodness he possesses as he holds his family\, member
s of his community and\, most of all\, his friendship with Samuel "Wheel
s" Macon\, together. However\, Enoch's Achilles heel is his debilitatin
g stutter. He can rarely manage a complete sentence. "Wheels" is Enoch
's best friend\, confined to a wheelchair since early childhood. His sp
irit knows no bounds\, and combined with Enoch's inability to articulate
\, the two have relied on one another to make themselves one completely
functional human being... though without each other\, they are nothing.
War Eagle\, Arkansas finds these two at the crossroads of childhood an
d independence -- Enoch has to decide if he will put away the things of
his youth to pursue his own interests\, or remain shackled to his hometo
wn and its people. Featuring a remarkable performance by Luke Grimes (re
miniscent of Johnny Depp's career-making performance in What's Eating G
ilbert Grape? )\, coming of age was never quite so bittersweet and movin
 g as it is here.

SUMMARY:Heaven On Earth
DESCRIPTION:EIFF favorite Deepa Mehta is back\, with another provocative
new film. Four years ago\, at a reception right here in Edmonton\, Ms. M
ehta met a young Punjabi woman who came to Canada as part of an arranged
marriage\, a marriage which soon disintegrated into a cycle of abuse. A
fter the birth of her daughter\, this brave young woman found the courag
e to turn her back on the marriage\, and symbolically\, on a tradition o
f patriarchal and cultural structure. Inspired by this story\, as well
as by an old Indian folk tale about a snake who visits a lonely and unha
ppy wife\, Heaven on Earth was born. It’s the story of a young India
n woman who finds herself in an abusive arranged marriage with an Indo-C
anadian. She creates an alternative reality to survive in her new world\
, thus allowing writer/director Mehta to explore themes of imagination a
nd mysticism\, as well as domestic abuse. In a tour-de-force performance
that is sure to have audiences talking\, Bollywood superstar Preity Zin
ta brings to life this abused young bride. A new film by Deepa Mehta is
always an event\, and her latest is no exception. EDMONTON Premiere!

tly – battled the evil empire of the MPAA over the NC-17 rating they ori
ginally gave this film. He fought\, he won\, and now his very R-Rated co
medy is ready to assault unsuspecting multiplexes throughout North Ameri
ca\, just in time for Halloween. But you don’t have to wait that long\,
for EIFF is thrilled to host this very special early screening of one of
this fall’s most highly-anticipated comedies. This is sure to be one of
the hottest tickets of this year’s festival\, so you're advised to get
 in line EARLY!

SUMMARY:45rpm
DESCRIPTION:It’s the early spring of 1958. Fifteen year old Parry Tender
(Jordan Gavaris) has lived in Goose Lake all his life. It isn’t much of
a town\; about two hundred folks in all give or take. Five hundred miles
north of nowhere with its 4\,000 foot gravel runway\, Alberta’s Goose L
ake is the perfect spot to airlift men and materials into Canada’s froze
n north. It’s all very secret – all very boring – and no one wants out m
ore than Parry\, who isn’t asking for much. He only wants a little more
than he already has: which is an old Cree grandfather named Peter George
(August Schellenberg) and his best friend Stacey Luke (Justine Banszky)
. But when the pretty daughter of an American Air Force Colonel arrives
in town\, stealing Parry’s heart\, Luke isn’t quite sure what will happ
 en next. It’s a confusing Spring of love\, loss and rock’n’roll. \n\n

SUMMARY:12
DESCRIPTION:Nominated for a 2008 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language
Film\, Nikita Mikhalkov's 12 is a brilliant Russian remake of the cour
troom clasic 12 Angry Men and screens as part of our World Cinema seri
es. As in Sidney Lumet’s 1957 classic\, 12 Angry Men \, most of the act
ion in 12 is confined to one jury room\, where a dozen jurors are aske
d to decide the fate of a young man accused of murder. It’s seemingly an
open and shut case\, until one dissenting voice forces each juror to re
think his original opinion. That’s where the similarities end\, for this
is – at its core – a truly Russian story\, with each character represen
ting a different aspect of modern Russian society. The Russian justice s
ystem may seem worlds away from what is generally accepted in the democr
atic world\, but the universal issues of humanity and racial-profiling p
resented here are relevant to everyone. Plus\, it’s one hell of a cracke
r-jack thriller. 2008 Academy Award nominee for BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE F
 ILM.

DESCRIPTION:JUDE is a nurse and single mother living with Sickle Cell Ane
mia. She works nights at the City Hospital to provide for her 12-year-ol
d son\, and dreams of returning home to Zion\, (St. Elizabeth\, Jamaica)
. SILENCE is a fighter\, intent on trusting no one. As a child\, he was
raised in a world bent on violence. When the untimely death of his train
er and father figure hits him\, Silence struggles to understand what he’
s fighting for. After a messy late-night brawl\, Silence goes to the hos
pital for care. There he meets Jude who dresses his wound. Their connect
ion is unspoken\, but palpable. CIEL is a boy\, wise beyond his years. H

SUMMARY:Wherever You Are
DESCRIPTION: Wherever You Are is a darkly comedic tale of a seemingly we

don’t want the whole town to know they actually have problems…) Dad’s a
closet homosexual\, Mom’s legally insane\, their younger son has ADHD\,
their older son stutters\, and their middle child\, a daughter\, is sex
ually promiscuous. Let us introduce you to the Bernstein family. Aided b
y family therapist Dr. Livingston (Joe Morton)\, they open their eyes an
d embrace the flaws they've spent their entire lives burying. It is a st
ory about what you find when you pull back the curtain and examine the d
epth behind seemingly ordinary people. Imagine Little Miss Sunshine wi
thout the pageant\, and you’ll start to understand the quirky charm of t
his film – it sneaks up on you\, and like the blockbuster pageant movie\

SUMMARY:Man On Wire
DESCRIPTION:Winner of both the Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize for
Documentary at this year's Sundance Film Festival\, one of 2008's best
-reviewed films\, the thrilling Man On Wire screens as part of our Do
 c Central programming strand. On August 7th\, 1974\, a young Frenchman n
amed Philippe Petit stepped out on a wire illegally rigged between New Y
ork's twin towers -- then the world’s tallest buildings. After nearly an
hour dancing on the wire\, he was arrested\, taken for psychological ev
aluation\, and brought to jail before he was finally released. Following
six and a half years of dreaming of the towers\, Petit spent eight mont
hs in New York City planning the execution of the coup. Aided by a team
of friends and accomplices\, Petit was faced with numerous extraordinary
challenges: he had to find a way to bypass the WTC’s security\; smuggle
the heavy steel cable and rigging equipment into the towers\; pass the
wire between the two rooftops\; anchor the wire and tension it to withst
and the winds and the swaying of the buildings. The rigging was done by
night in complete secrecy. At 7:15 AM\, Philippe took his first step on
the high wire 1\,350 feet above the sidewalks of Manhattan… James Marsh’
s documentary brings Petit’s extraordinary adventure to life through the
testimony of Philippe himself\, and some of the co-conspirators who hel
ped him create the unique and magnificent spectacle that became known as

SUMMARY:Mothers & Daughters
DESCRIPTION: MEET THE FILMMAKER - DIRECTOR CARL BESSAI IN ATTENDANCE FOR
THIS ANTICIPATED EDMONTON PREMIERE! After triumphantly opening last yea
r’s EIFF with his brooding drama\, Normal \, local son Carl Bessai retu
rns to us this year with a much different work – the largely improvised
 and highly collaborative comedy\, Mothers & Daughters . Yes\, we said c
omedy. Mothers&Daughters is\, in fact\, a comedic drama that blends el
ements of narrative and documentary film. It follows three mother/daught
er pairs as they unknowingly approach a pivotal moment in their lives\,
while offering a diverse glimpse into the needs\, the denials\, and the
inescapable love that these women feel towards each other. Exploring the
hilarious\, the ridiculous\, and the complicated dynamics of mother/dau

SUMMARY:Sex Positive
DESCRIPTION: Sex Positive explores the life of Richard Berkowitz\, a rev
olutionary gay S&M hustler turned AIDS activist in the 1980s\, whose inc
omparable contribution to the invention of safe sex has never been aptly
credited. Berkowitz emerged from the epicenter of the epidemic\, demand
ing a solution to the problem long before those within - or outside - of
the gay community would take heed. However\, it was not Berkowitz's voi
ce alone that sparked contention. Dr. Joseph Sonnabend\, a controversial
virologist and AIDS doctor\, postulated that AIDS was more complicated
than just a new virus. With Sonnabend's theory in tow\, Berkowitz fought
\, alongside beloved activist and musician Michael Callen\, for safer se
x practices with out giving up on sex altogether. EIFF is fortunate to
welcome Richard Berkowitz to Edmonton for this very special screening\,
with very special post-screening Q&A session hosted by Michael Phair and
  Ted Kerr.

SUMMARY:Audience of One
DESCRIPTION:Near the end of the 20th Century\, a Pentecostal pastor from
San Francisco was praying on a mountain top\, when he received a vision
from God to ‘spread the Gospel through filmmaking’. Using donations from
his congregation\, he slowly transformed his church into a fully functi
oning movie studio\, and the production company Christian WYSIWYG Filmw
orks was born. After experimenting on a number of small projects\, Past
or Richard Gazowsky announced that he and his WYSIWYG crew were to begin
production of the sci-fi epic\, Gravity: The Shadow of Joseph – a bib
lical science fiction movie that would redefine the Hollywood epic! Aud
ience of One chronicles a journey - from pre-production meetings in the
church basement\, to principal photography in Italy\, to the leasing of
a gigantic Bay Area studio –that would ultimately test the limits of ev
 eryone’s faith. Hilarious\, provocative\, and always entertaining\, Aud
ience of One is a story of obsession\, faith and – to some - a healthy
dose of delusion. WESTERN CANADA Premiere!

SUMMARY:Down To the Dirt
DESCRIPTION: MEET THE STAR OF Down to the Dirt - IN ATTENDANCE AT THIS AL
BERTA PREMIERE SCREENING! Down to the Dirt is a darkly humorous chron
icle of one man’s improbable redemption. Keith Kavanagh (Joel Thomas Hyn
es) is the turbulent hero of this visceral feature film adaptation of th
e internationally acclaimed novel. When first we meet Keith Kavanagh\, h
e may have almost burned down the north side of the Cove\, his small New
foundland hometown. His hard-drinking\, hard-ticket\, hooligan ways have
made him a legend throughout the southern shore. He keeps his ragged co
llection of Bukowski-esque poetry a closely guarded secre... as well as
his deep regret towards his shattered relationship with his father (Robe
rt Joy). When he meets the darkly exotic Natasha (Mylène Savoie)\, Keit
h’s life is changed forever. A firecracker much like himself\, the beaut
iful Natasha longs to break free from the small town\, small minded exis
tence of the Cove. For once Keith feels passion not for debauchery and d
estruction\, but for something even more dangerous: love. Down to the D
irt is a sexy\, scary\, and funny ride about creating a new self out of
the burning ashes of the old\, and it features an unforgettable perform
ance by the man who wrote the book upon which this film is based – Joel
Thomas Hynes. IN ATTENDANCE: Star Joel Thomas Hynes Down To the Dirt
is in competition for the Citytv Canadian Feature Award \, chosen by Y

SUMMARY:Adam's Apples
DESCRIPTION:Adam (Ulrich Thomsen) is a neo-Nazi thug who's been sentenced
to community service in a small church in the countryside. His supervis
or is Ivan (Mads Mikkelsen)\, a priest who's totally bereft of any sense
of humor. When the sullen Adam\, urged to decide what he wants to accom
plish during his community service\, says he wants to bake a pie\, Ivan
assigns him to guard a nearby apple tree and bake a pie when the fruit i
s ripe. Two other cons doing community service are: Gunnar (Nicolas Bro)
\, a kleptomaniac with a history of sexually assaulting women\, and Khal
id (Ali Kazim)\, a permanently angry immigrant from Afghanistan who robs
gas stations belonging to multinationals as a statement against capital
ism. As he did in his previous concoctions\, Flickering Lights and Th
e Green Butchers \, director Jensen doses out his usual mixture of gags\
, slapstick and bone-crunching violence\, successfully managing to walk
the thin line between political incorrectness and dark comedy. Finally m
aking its long-awaited Edmonton debut\, this outrageous black comedy is

DESCRIPTION:Leon Kauffman (Bradley Cooper) is a New York City photographe

get pics of breaking news for the papers. When he finally gets a meetin

's portfolio for not truly capturing the city\, challenging him to push
the boundaries in his art. Leon is more than happy to oblige\, and becom

fort\, though\, he and Maya are drawn into the killer's twisted undergro

SUMMARY:The Greatest Auto Race on Earth
DESCRIPTION: This exclusive film screening is by INVITATION ONLY! In Nov
ember of 1907 The French newspaper Le Matin and New York Times issue
d a challenge that would set the stage for The Greatest Auto Race on Ea
rth and unknowingly precipitated a chain of events that helped shape th
e world. The challenge: to travel by car around the world from New York
to Paris. And with the crack of a golden pistol\, the greatest auto rac
e on earth was launched on February 12\, 1908. The American Thomas Flye
r \, the German Protos \, the French de Dion \, Motobloc \, and Siza
ire all started from New York – three made it to Paris. What drove the
se men to take six months out of their lives and embark on a journey tha
t no one at that time had ever attempted\, and hasn’t since. Their priz
e: a trophy … and knowing that you had done it. Filmed almost entirely
in Alberta\, this documentary tells the story of the men\, and the mach
ines\, that took up the challenge and (unknowingly) spent six months of
their lives traversing the globe – and it is the culmination of director
Michael Hamm’s journey to tell this monumental story.

SUMMARY:One Week
DESCRIPTION: One Week tells the story of Ben Tyler (Joshua Jackson)\, a
man in his mid-twenties who is diagnosed with a virulent cancer. He has
only a 10% chance of survival. Though it is imperative that he begin tre
atment immediately\, Ben instead takes off on a road trip on an impulsiv

escape soon morphs into a cross-country odyssey from Toronto to Tofino.
\nAgainst the immensity of the Canadian landscape and the enormity of h

his illness: his unfulfilling job as a high school English teacher\, and

DESCRIPTION: All Together Now is preceded by the short film Not So Crue
l\, Today . Formula One car racing seems an unlikely backdrop for the Be
atles and Cirque du Soleil® to first make contact. But George Harrison a
nd Cirque founder Guy Laliberté met at Grand Prix events and discovered
a mutual passion for motor sports. Out of those encounters grew not only
a great friendship\, but an idea to marry the timeless music of The Bea
tles with the artistry of the world-renowned Cirque du Soleil - both par
tners agreeing to share creative control for the first time ever. And e
ven though George Harrison passed away before development of THE BEATLE
S – LOVE began\, his spirit looms large over every aspect of this spect
acular production. Combining archival material\, alongside intimate inte

SUMMARY:CFMDC ReGeneration
DESCRIPTION:What better way to celebrate a big birthday than by throwing
a party and ensuring some great gifts? To mark their 40th anniversary la
st year\, the CFMDC (Canadian Filmmakers' Distribution Centre) commissio
ned seven artists to make works inspired by films that are significant t
o them as image-makers. Premieres meet archetypes from the avant-garde i
n this unique evening that pairs new films with their influential compan
ion pieces. Adam Garnet Jones's Secret Weapons is an intensely persona
l animated film essay whose formal qualities speak to Mike Hoolboom's se
 minal\, award-winning Frank's Cock (1993). Izabella Pruska-Oldenhof fa
shions a visual duet comprised of a 16mm film\, The Garden of Earthy De
lights \, and a self-portrait photogram motivated by the incomparable vi
rtuosity of Stan Brakhage's Christ Mass Sex Dance (1991). Jerry Theven
t's Shelley renders homage to Shelley Niro's work in its meditation on
binding relationships between nature\, Western ideals\, and native life
in Canada. Louise Bourque's use of home movies in Fissures (1999) tri
ggers a promise from mother to son in Lise Beaudry's La Vie en pellicul
 e . With a playful\, destructive spirit\, Chris Gehman's Rostrum Press:
Materials Testing "responds to an isolated aspect of two films by Mich
ael Snow: Breakfast (Table Top Dolly) (1972-76) and Presents (1980-8
1)\, with an additional/incidental nod to Snow's Wavelength (1967)" (Chr

is a miniature study of grief and tribute to Midi Onodera's The Basemen

s already being hailed as 'this year's Juno' (with a touch of 'Heroes' t
hrown in for good measure). For as long as she could remember\, Dakota S

ruth in any lie she hears. From small\, harmless white lies\, to the mor
e devious kind\, they have come from the people that she should trust th
e most -- her family\, friends and teachers. These lies have snowballed\
, leading to her becoming bitter and apathetic towards the world around

in her own life. One day\, Jonah comes into town. It only takes a few d

s eyes are opened to the world around her and she sees that there is som
ething out there more than all the lies. There is a possibility of somet
hing different... something better. If only he wasn't her boyfriend's be

SUMMARY:Momma's Man
DESCRIPTION:Azazel Jacobs’ Momma's Man chronicles the increasingly anxi
ous dilemma of Mikey (Matt Boren)\, a young husband and father who stops
off at his parents’ loft during a business trip to New York and finds h
imself emotionally unable to leave. One of the most acclaimed films of t
his year's Sundance Film Festival\, Jacobs' third feature is both a trib
ute to his parents (avant-garde filmmaker Ken Jacobs and painter Flo Jac
obs\, who play Mikey’s mother and father) and an acutely perceptive\, sl
yly humorous take on a universal experience: the fear of growing up. Com
ing to EIFF with near-deafening critical acclaim\, Momma’s Man is a sh
ining example of why Azazel Jacobs is one of today’s most exciting new c
inematic voices. “This deceptively simple\, marvelously filmed and profo
undly affecting movie is first and foremost a love letter from director
Jacobs to his parents...it’s a film of acute perceptions\, great sadness
and wordless\, ecstatic joy\, and the one unforgettable narrative film
I saw at this year’s [Sundance Film Festival].” — Andrew O’Hehir\, Salo
n “An extraordinary movie in every way.” — Peter Travers\, Rolling Sto
 ne .

SUMMARY:Gomorrah
DESCRIPTION:Based on a hard-hitting Italian non-fiction bestseller that f
orced its author into hiding\, Gomorrah is a chronicle of the Neapolit
an mob known as the Camorra. Traveling from the horrifying slum projects
of suburban Naples to the corporate suites and the high-fashion atelier
s\, the film finds them all corrupted by organized crime. Mulitple stor
ylines abound: two brash teenagers decide to wage war against the local
Camorra boss\; a tailor in a mob-supported fashion business secretly goe
s to work for their Chinese-sweatshop rivals\; a businessman arranges th
e illegal dumping of corporate toxic waste on mob-owned land\; while a g
rocery delivery boy and an aging mob soldier become pawns in a widening
gang war. While Garrone’s film is ostensibly about one crime-plagued ci
ty\, it is also a commentary on Italy's social and political ills in gen
eral. Combining many elements of traditional Italian cinema – Gomorrah
is a stunner of thriller that ranks with the classic crime thrillers o
 f all time. EDMONTON Premiere!

SUMMARY:Goodbye Baby
DESCRIPTION:Sheltered Long Island teen Melissa Brooks is popular and attr
active\, but can't afford to go to college. In an effort to move away fr
om her mother and her live-in boyfriend\, she moves in with her brother
Robbie and his boyfriend Miller in their SoHo apartment. Melissa doesn't
mind not going to college\; to everyone's surprise she'd rather be a st
and up comic instead. She finds work as a waitress at a comedy club whil
e honing her act and working up the nerve to get on stage. Between Robbi
e's jazz band and Miller's acting career\, she is quickly drawn into the
downtown scene. While trying to get over her crippling fear of public s
peaking by covertly attending support groups\, she meets Kevin\, a kindr
ed spirit with a troubled past. Their budding relationship is threatened
when Melissa is wooed away by the wealthy and smooth-talking Dominick.
Just as her act begins to click and she just might have this relationshi

haken badly as old tragedies crash back in on her. With an absolutely te
